I chose to specifically focus on an architectural firm based in Long Island City called
Costas Kondylis & Partners. It is one of the preeminent residential architectural firms in the
New York metropolitan area. One of the companies most celebrated peices of work is the 72
story Trump World Tower that now stands on First Avenue between 47th and 48th streets in
Manhattan. It is one of the most recognizable structures on the eastern midtown skyline, as
well as one of the most expensive aprtament towers in the world.
Architectural firms have alot to gain from implimenting sustainability into their designs.
The whole process, from designing the building on paper, to constructing it, provides many
opportunities to improve sustainabilty, thereby improving people's quality of life, helping restore
the environment, and increasing profit for the company.. It seems especially important in New
York City, where there is already a critical mass urban core established with a very high
standard of living. Anyone building on the island of Manhattan must be very careful not to
disturb the existing environment to a large degree. An overally polluted or poorly constructed
building could impact several blocks and even several neighborhoods. This is why it is
essential to take the necessary steps to plan ahead for any concerns while at the same time
minimizing any problems that do pop up during the course of construction.
