             Although many children affected with this condition experience the common symptoms, many of them have other symptoms that others do not have. ADHD is found in a very wide variety of ages spanning from kindergarten children to older adults with families and successful jobs. Although people can live full, healthy lives with ADHD it is very uncommonly outgrown, even with treatment. Although ADHD affects the person's learning abilities, it is not categorized under learning disabilities.
             Among the early labels used to describe ADHD was minimal brain dysfunction. An epidemic of encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) early in this century left many with problems of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Thereafter, these problems were thought to be neurological because they were seen as clear consequences of brain injury among epidemic survivors. When the same set of problems (inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity) was noted among children without known brain injury, it was assumed that some unidentified brain injury must be present, but that it must be extremely subtle, hard to detect, or "minimal". This minimal brain injury, or minimal brain dysfunction, was believed to be the most root of all inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity for which no clear history of brain injury existed. As a result, hyperactive or inattentive children were often referred to as having minimal brain damage or dysfunction. This label continued through the 1950's and 1960's.
