Although hyperactivity is the predominant element in ADHD, there have been cases where children and adults do not experience hyperactivity. In 1980, attention-deficit disorder (ADD) became the new title or term used because some researchers had come to believe that inattention was the central deficiency. The term ADD was changed to ADHD in the late 1980's. The change was upheld in terminology, but grouped under the heading of either Inattention or Hyperactivity-Impulsivity. The name has not been changed since but is more commonly used in the new century (Woodrich 2000).
