could work together peacefully to achieve a common goal. Many worked as a group, but others worked individually to reduce the risk of being caught. The Underground Railroad spread by word of mouth (Turner, 50). This was one of the most informal, yet stealthy systems of people helping slaves escape by themselves or by a guide, all for the same goal, moving north to freedom (Scheel). The Underground Railroad period of action was during 1817 to 1861 mainly during the pre-Civil War era (Turner, p.2). During those forty-four years, more than 100,000 slaves used the Underground Railroad, yet a few reached freedom. After entering the northern United States, slaves continued to the north into Canada, in fear of being kidnapped and returned back to the south into slavery. Canada refused to return slaves to the United States after passing a law in 1826 (Scheel, "Journey to Freedom was Risky for Slaves and Guides", The Washington Post). The Underground Railroad was known as one of the most dramatic protest movement against slavery. Thirty-four states and two territories were aids in the evolution and success of the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad also had connections with Florida, which at the time was owned by Spain, the Caribbean, Canada and Mexico ("Taking the Train to Freedom").
             At this time in history, many states and territories were divided. Some states were anti-slavery, some were pro-slavery, and others were neutral. The anti-slavery states were the established western states and northern states. The pro-slavery states were southern states and Florida after being redeemed from Spain in 1783. The southwest, west and northwestern territories remained neutral at the time of late 1700's and early 1800's. Many of these territories were neutral because they were non-established lands and yet to enter into the United States of America as a state (Kallen, 31).
