governmental attention. The Anti-Inflation Act (1942) was passed and this gave the administration authority to freeze agricultural prices, wages, salaries, and rents throughout the country. By doing so, the government could stabilize the economy. The Office of Price Administration (OPA) was established to enforce such acts as the Anti-Inflation Act. The OPA was never popular, and the result was the creation of a new black market, which crept behind administrators. Things were beginning to turn around. Never before had the national debt risen at such drastic rates (from $49 billion to $259 billion). The Revenue Act (1492) established a 94% rate for the highest brackets and, also for the first time, imposed taxes on the lowest-income families as well.
