Their growing economic weight will be felt in the governing councils and major international institutions such as the IMF and the WTO. Some of the big emerging markets will also be pivotal to the resolution of key conflicts between China and Taiwan, the two Koreas, and India and Pakistan.
             Last, but most important, the ability of the world to move toward a democratic-capitalistic society, where individuals have dignity, where freedom is the rule, and where living standards rise for all, depends on the simultaneous economic and political openings occurring in all the BEMs.
             The rewards of operating in, and trading with the BEMs
             Growth in the big emerging markets will produce dramatic changes in the global economy, including a shift of wealth and power. In 1995 these countries accounted for 10.2 percent of the world's output. In less than two decades that share is likely to double. OECD projected that if China, Indonesia, and India each grew by 6 percent per year for the next fifteen years, 700 million people in these countries (equivalent to the combined populations of America, Japan, and Western Europe) would then have an average income equal to that of the average Spaniard today. This would create an enormous demand for everyday goods, such as hygiene products, educational products, as well as, technological products.
