Jesus and His disciples traveled to neighboring towns and villages of Capernaum
manifesting the approach of the Kingdom of God, much like the Hebrew prophets that came
before Him had also done. Jesus stressed the undying love that God has for the modest and
feeble. He promised eternal life in Heaven to anyone who would ask for it and sincerely
The Gospel According to John describes His ministry as beginning with Christ calling His
twelve disciples. They are Simon ( called Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip,
Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew the tax collector, James, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, and
Judas Iscariot, who was the one to betray Him. Most of these disciples were fishermen from
Galilee. The last year of Jesus' ministry was dedicated to instructing the disciples. This
change of direction was not due predominantly to the lack of response of the people, even
though his following would sometimes fade for periods of time; It was because of His
longing to instruct His disciples about Himself and His mission. Though they had learned
much by listening to Jesus address the multitudes of people, through seeing Him heal the
sick, and by being sent out by Him to minister unto the people in His name, they still needed
more direct instruction in order to prepare them for the part they would play in building the
church after His ascension back into Heaven ( Tenney 158-159).
The things they all heard and saw during those days proved to them that Jesus was really
the Messiah previously talked about by the prophets of the Old Testament, and the Son of
God, yet they stillwere not prepared to receive His teaching of his earthly life, involving
