             Multiculturalism is presented and represented not only in literature, but also in the very fiber of Canadian society. "In 1971, Canada became the first country in the world to adopt a multiculturalism policy." Passing the Employment Equity Act in 1986 and the Canadian Multiculturalism Act in 1988. These acts direct the federal government to work toward equality in the economic, social, cultural and political life of the country. The government's aim is to build an inclusive society based on respect, equality and the full participation of all citizens, regardless of race, ethnic origin, language or religion." Yet, although the government places multiculturalism as an ideal, what 'is left to be desired' is the process of achieving this equality. Lee in his essay of anti-racist education suggests that the route towards multiculturalism is via the educational route. "Anti-racist education moves us forward to construct the true multicultural society..." (Lee, p.72). In hopes of taking us beyond the aspects of culture, food, and festivals, to the aspects of society that will lead to change. The goal of society, he states, is the equality of opportunity.
