They used a series of laws named the "Jim Crow Laws" (http://www.nps.gov/malu/documents/jim_crow_laws.htm) to keep the African Americans restricted. Life for African Americans was hard, they did not get the same type of education, the same chances of owning land, and the same chances to earn as much as a white person. In the court of law, where all should be equal, it was a rarity that an African American would ever win a case, as portrayed in the story using Tom Robinson. The honest, hard working, courteous man, was thrown in a controversy involving a young woman. The young woman attempted to seduce him in a sudden, spontaneous act. When the young woman's father saw this happen, he started cussing at everybody in the room in a drunken rage, where he then sexually attacks his own daughter.
