The era of reconstruction had many difficulties for the Black man, and it took many years for the black race to get what they deserved. Even after they were freed from slavery there was still much animosity towards the black race, especially from democrats and radicals. I believe that the political side of the United Sates did not do much during the years of reconstruction tot help out the back man. I believe that many political events during reconstruction undermined the freedom aspirations that the black people had. I will talk about the events that hindered the hopes and dreams of the black man, and what political parties were involved.
I will start of with Lincoln who was given much more credit for being the pioneer of equal rights for blacks then he deserved or ever wanted. First of all Lincoln always thought that blacks were an inferior race and depending on where he was giving the speech his attitude would change. Lincoln had problems keeping the states together for some southern states wanted to secede, and they believed it was their constitutional right. Both northern states and southern states could not agree if it was a constitutional right to secede. Lincoln had stated in his first inaugural address that the union was older then the states and that each state had given up part of their sovereignty to the federal government. Many radical republicans in congress did not agree with Lincoln's view on restoring the south, they wanted the south to lie down in front of the north. This was always a problem because the radical republicans always thought differently than Lincoln, and congress and the president should be one. One main reason for these disagreements was that deep down Lincoln was a Whig, and had stayed true to the Whig party until it had collapsed; then he had no other choice but to join the republicans.
