New methods to assist in calculations of mathematics followed. In 1800 B.C., a Babylonian mathematician began a system to calculate algorithms to assist in computing numerical problems. Around 530 B.C., modern math began with the use of gnomons and small pebbles. In 105 B.C., a mathematician established the first school of technology at Alexandria, Egypt to promote the study of mathematics. When paper was produced in China in the year 100, it quickly began to be used to develop and record mathematical work and designs. As the abacus arrived in Europe in the year 300, mathematicians there were aided in their mathematic calculations. In 595, the use of decimals appeared in India. In 1398, Trevisa, a scribe, first used the name compotystes, or computer, as he described how to maintain a calendar.
Other developments continued from 1400 to 1800 that influenced the development of the computer. Johann Gutenberg was the first to use movable type to print in 1456. Later on in the 1400's, the minus and plus symbols (- and +) were introduced. At the turn of the century in 1502, the watch was invented. This was a major contribution to the invention of the computer because its internal clock allows the modern computer to work correctly. In the early sixteen hundreds, a nobleman named John Napier devised a set of numbering rods, known as "Napier's bones", to aid in mathematical calculations. These "bones" were movable multiplication tables, aiding with multiplication and division. They lead to other inventions, such as, the slide rule and other calculating machines.
