The treaty brought forth extreme limitations of German weapons and made trade international on many rivers and also the Kiel Canal located in southern Europe. It also demilitarized a thirty-mile stretch of the Rhine River and provided allied occupations of certain areas of German territory for fifteen years (Young 15). The Allies accepted the Leagues initial guarantees due to the extensive territorial demands of Germany. After the American withdrawal, France sought to continue the occupation of the Rhine River valley on the grounds that Germany was failing to follow the obligations of the treaty.
