The biggest culprit of them all is the magazine plastered cover to cover with images and advertisements portraying the ideal body which happens to be at times 30% underweight. These magazines monthly have a attention grabbing story posted on the cover "BEST NEW DIET! LOOSE THOSE LAST 20 POUND AND BE HAPPIER THAN EVER! ARE THOSE EXTRA POUNDS HOLDING YOU BACK IN LIFE, LOVE AND YOUR CAREER?" Those titles are just a few that monthly appear on millions of magazines each and every month for women and young girls to view. The American Academy of Pediatricians conducted a survey based on the viewing of such magazines. "Girls were asked about their frequency of reading women's fashion magazines reported that 69% felt that the appearance of models in magazines influenced their image of a perfect female body. Among the girls surveyed 47% desired weight loss due to those images"(Dr. Hogan, AAP). Those statistics are startling to know that young girls identify themselves against the images the media portrays of them. The media's influence on body image goes deeper than just the models. It is important to realize that magazines, television and movies would not be possible if advertising companies were not apart of the equation.
