Calhoun, and others state, "Sociologists define deviance as any behavior that members of a social group define as violating their norms. This concept applies both to criminal acts of deviance and non-criminal acts that members of a group view as unethical, immoral, peculiar, sick, or otherwise outside the bounds of respectability." (Calhoun, 168)
There are infinite problems with youth today. Unfortunately there is no perfect solution, which I believe is because there is no perfect reason for unlawful conduct. The statistics show between 1960 and 1995 the number of delinquency cases in juvenile court went from 20.1 for every 1,000 youth in 1960, to 60.7 in 1995 (Juvenile Justice, 3rd edition, pg. 15). With this in mind, youth of today have been what I consider pampered, neglected, and allowed to express one's self individuality to an extreme or rather without parental guidance. This has caused a type of moral bankruptcy so to speak and sparked the development of a deviant value system in juvenile delinquents. Children learn at a very young age the difference between right and wrong, and discipline within the family is an integral part of this development. It is up to the parents to provide a solid value system the child can work with and eventually expand on. What I see today are parents who want to coddle their children, let them be individuals and express themselves without guiding or communicating with them through the process. While self expression and individuality is tremendously important for young people, it becomes a problem when parents neglect to take notice or become involved in what their teenagers are doing and in what ways they are using this form of independents.
