             Another example is the Mountain Meadow Massacre in 1857, when members of the Latter -Day - Saints Church (Mormons) kill white emigrants, including women and children, in Utah. The executions are carried out under the authority of the leader of the religious organization, based on the belief of blood atonement, which requires bloodshed as a form of payment for sins.
