A long-term affect of ruling with one prince is that if the state is ever taken over, the old stones, or foundation, that once stood with the old prince are still there and waiting when the state returns to the original prince. I see how this is a very good possibility but I think Machiavelli is assuming a little too much. I'm sure its happened in the past but there's always an exception.
             This chapter is titled "mixed principalities" because this chapter involves the different types of principalities. The way you get a mixed principality to mix old and new principalities together. People will create new principalities because they believe it will aid them, when in fact it only makes things worse. I believe this is referring to a revolution. Machiavelli then states that it is easier to hold a rebellious territory after conquering it twice because the original ruler, who uses rebellion as a motive, wont want uncover suspects and strengthen his position where ever it is weak. It might just be me, but I think he is assuming a lot again. Next he goes on to explain that it is easier to hold two conquered territories if they are not accustomed to freedom, speak the same language, and are in the same region. In order to conquer such territories you must kill the former ruling family and do not alter taxes or laws to gain comfort and confidence with the people. If two conquered territories are not alike, as stated above, then the new ruler should first move there in order to solve small problems that arise which adds to comfort the people's feelings for the new prince.
