newly acquired states to fortify it. Colonies are in expensive, very loyal (except for the 13 colonies), and do little harm. Machiavelli didn't live until 1776 so you can't blame him. I just want to add that Machiavelli doesn't have enough proof to make his philosophy always correct. It might of just been the fact that he lived in a completely different era that the 13 colonies.
             This chapter is titled "how states were managed after Alexander the greats death" because this chapter discusses the two ways to manage a principality after a sudden acquire. All states are governed by two ways: one, by a single prince aided by servants functioning as ministers and governing by his favor and concession. These states are harder to conquer but easier to manage because to corrupt the only person in charge, that everyone knows ands trusts, would be impossible.
