Social versus family responsibility in "The Lame Shall Enter

             In the essay "The Lame Shall Enter First" Flannery O'Connor sustains the role one single father between his son and his social work. This essay will briefly enlighten the responsibility Sheppard as father to his ten years old son, Norton. In the other side, Sheppard has his thoughts to do a good with others people. Sheppard as a father for Norton who needs more attention because his mother dead does not realize it. He more pays attention to another thing such as his work and his cares to other people.
             Sheppard tries to run away from the death of his wife." Don't you think I'm lonely without her too?" Don't you think I miss her at all? I do, but I'm not sitting around mopping. I'm busy helping other people. When do you see me just sitting around thinking about my troubles?"" (O'Connor 336). In this conversation we can see that Sheppard tries to make his attention to his activities so he can forget his wife's death. He wants his son to forget his mother and tries to make him never mentions his mother again.
             Sheppard wants to free from his son. He thinks that his son could stand with what happened to them without his care.
             Sheppard sat helpless and miserable, like a man lashed by some elemental force of nature. This was not a normal grief. It was all part of his selfishness. She had been dead for over a year and a child's grief should not last so long. "You're going on eleven years old," he said reproachfully.
             The child began an agonizing high-pitched heaving noise.
             "If you stop thinking about yourself and think what you can do for somebody else," Sheppard said," then you'll stop missing your mother."(336 O'Connor)
             Sheppard forgets that he role being a single father to his son. His son is only ten years old who still needs care from him. Who that needs knowledge about life.
