we searched for in three malls. If I wish to be in style, noticed by the right crowd, my boss, my clients, or anyone else I want to impress, I am going to follow the trend. Soooo...who sets the trend? The trendsetters, of course! Those movie stars, recording artists, and designers to whom we pay tribute by following their lead and purchasing like items.
Why the eighties? According to an article I read from the New York Times was that everything was strip mined out in a retro fashion and music sense from the sixties and seventies. There was nothing left! So, since we are in the zeros, its time for the eighties. Just enough time has passed for remoteness and the moths in my closet to eat everything I wore in the eighties. I read in the same article that pop cult revivals arrive every twenty years. What prompts this phenomenon? Is it possible the fashion industry, after decades of barraging us with a cornucopia of garments, just ran out of ideas? After all, how much can you do with cotton, silk, rayon, polyester, saffron, wool, leather, and some of the others I failed to mention? Actually, there are countless opportunities just waiting to be discovered with the inspiration, education, and market savvy of those trendsetters. My first thought was that we live in some type of fashion hurricane. As a hurricane gradually progresses, its winds, clouds, rains, and destruction expands out for thousands of miles. The same is true about the fashion hurricane. As we progress in fashion and style through technology and global identity, the whole clothing, music, and movie genre is like a giant storm expanding out through time by decades. There were some styles and designs that appeared in the eighties that people were not ready to embrace, perhaps those styles were too radical (remember Prince's ruffle shirts or the Raspberry Beret?) at that time and may be ready to be embraced now.
